FISSURE SEALANTS

Fissure sealants help stop tooth decay before it begins. We seal the pits and fissures that your toothbrush bristles can’t reach with a fissure sealant. This protects the surface of your teeth from plaque and acids. It is a quick and completely painless procedure .

TOOTHACHE

If you have a tooth that is sensitive to hot or cold or uncomfortable when biting or eating, it’s a sign that something is not right. Different kinds of tooth pain have different causes. If you’re experiencing severe toothache or have a chipped or broken tooth, then it’s time to get it seen by the Whitecaps Dental Team.

Getting a dentist to review your tooth early could prevent further deterioration and help to avoid more complex and costly treatments. In severe cases, without seeing a dentist, you could end up losing the tooth or allowing an infection to enter the blood stream, which then requires hospitalisation.

So it’s always worth checking, and at the very least, you could find out your teeth are in good health and you’ll have a better sleep for it!

Wisdom teeth are funny. Some people experience painful wisdom teeth, and some may not or  never get wisdom teeth at all. One thing is for sure though, it’s no fun if your wisdom teeth start behaving badly! So if you do experience discomfort, come in and see us. We have the expertise right here in our practice to handle most wisdom teeth procedures, including emergency wisdom teeth removal.

Sometimes removing wisdom teeth is easy. At other times the removal can be quite tricky. If we suspect your case will prove to be troublesome, we will refer you to an oral surgeon.

Do you play contact sport? You might need a custom mouth guard! 

It takes two simple appointments to get a custom-fitted mouthguard, but the comfort is well worth the wait! All we need is to take an impression of your teeth so we can get started with making your mouthguard. You’ll also get to choose the colour and the design of your mouthguard.

After a week or two you’ll come in for your fitting appointment. Again, it’ll take less than 15 minutes, but it’s enough time to make sure you’re getting a perfect fit for your mouth and teeth. A perfect fit means maximum protection which an over the counter mouthguard cannot offer.

NIGHT GUARDS / OCCLUSAL SPLINTS

If we find signs that suggest you’ve been grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep we’ll likely suggest using a custom fitted nightguard, especially if you’ve also been experiencing sore jaw joints and headaches. Grinding and clenching can sometimes also be a silent issue – Many people don’t realise that they’ve been doing this until their dentist lets them know! Nightguards usually fit snuggly over the biting surface of your upper teeth, protecting them from further damage. They also help to open your bite, which stops you from clenching with force. This helps relieve jaw pain which means fewer headaches and more smiles  - which is exactly what the team at Whitecaps Dental want to see!

For us, a tooth extraction is the last resort. Yes, it can be an incredibly simple process, but it can also lead to functional and cosmetic problems down the line – which may be more complex and expensive to fix. So first and foremost, we always do our best to try to save as many teeth and keep your smile as it is!

However, unfortunately there are times when other treatment options aren’t likely to be successful. Whether it’s a planned extraction or an emergency, rest assured you are in good hands.

Dentures would you believe, have been around for thousands of years! But because today’s dentures are custom made in a dental laboratory, they’re much easier to get your hands on.

There are two types of dentures – complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it also prevents other teeth from shifting into the empty spaces while helping with function. The denture can also be made out of plastic or metal – have a chat to your dentist about your preferences and we can see what we can do for you!

Maybe a crown is for you!

A crown is used to entirely cover a damaged tooth, and is primarily there to strengthen it, as well as improving the appearance, shape or alignment. They are superior to a filling as they are longer-lasting and give your tooth the best protection possible.

They are generally made of porcelain and/or metal,and can conceal and improve any damage to an individual tooth. The technique used has improved so much that crowns are not detectable in the mouth, and are colour-matched to the natural teeth for a natural looking result. 

If you’ve got a missing tooth, then a bridge might be just what you need. At Whitecaps Dental, we begin by getting the teeth either side of your missing tooth ready for crowns. These teeth will act as support for your new artificial tooth that goes between them. Together, the crowns and artificial tooth between them form the complete bridge.

Root canal treatment is the procedure to remove an irreparably damaged nerve inside your tooth. Your front teeth have a single canal and your back teeth have multiple canals.

There are many different reasons for your dentist to recommend root canal treatment. You might have a dental abscess that is causing you pain or swelling. It might be that active decay has affected the nerve or pulp of your tooth. Or perhaps you’ve experienced some trauma or fractured your tooth in an accident, affecting the nerve or pulp, even if it happened many years ago. 

Whatever the reason, for us, root canal treatment is usually a last resort – however it does save your tooth from being extracted. 

Root canal treatment if often thought of extremely painful. This is not the case as our dentists always ensure that your procedure goes as painless as possible by using a variety of anaesthetics and numbing agents to ensure you are as comfortable as can be!
